If you wish to become a Swedish citizen, you can apply for Swedish citizenship provided that
the following requirements are met:

  1. Strengthened Identity: You must be able to prove your identity.
  2. Age: You must be at least 18 years old.
  3. Permanent residence permit: You must have had a permanent residence permit in Sweden.
  4. Residency in Sweden: Your period of residence in Sweden will vary depending on your situation:
Stateless or assessed as a refugee: 4 years and for Other foreigners: 5 years.
    - For applicants who cannot prove their identity, but can only make it probable, there is a requirement of extended residence of at least 8 years.
  5. Honest way of life: You must have had and can be expected to have an honest lifestyle.
    - Honest living means, among other things, not having debts with the Swedish Enforcement Authority or being convicted of a crime.
    - Anyone who has been part of or had influence over an undemocratic organization may risk not being granted citizenship until 25 years after leaving the organization.

If you have children and want them to acquire Swedish citizenship, you can include their application in your own. For children over 12, their consent is required.

If your application for Swedish citizenship is rejected, which means that you will not become a Swedish citizen, you can appeal the decision. It is important to note that the appeal must be made within three weeks of receiving the decision. If you appeal after this deadline, there is a risk that the Migration Court will not consider your appeal. Sometimes the Swedish Migration Agency can make wrong decisions, and appealing gives you the opportunity to have the decision reviewed by the Migration Court.

At Rubinstein & Khoury, we are ready to help you appeal a decision to the Migration Court. If you are interested in finding out more about how we can help you, please contact us at Rubinstein & Khoury.
